ARTIST STATEMENT
I create multimedia drawings and paintings as an instinctual exercise of working through feelings of callousness, indecisiveness, and exploitation. I use a collage aesthetic that allows me to place juxtapositions to periods of my own life, and broader concepts about building a life for oneself away from their family. I use narratives in my pieces to visualize the relationships and interactions between different symbolic characters to mirror the actual inner workings of the concepts and emotions I am prospecting. I often mourn the loss of loved ones before the actual tragedy occurs that results in a numbness to the eventual reality. I question whether this is a healthy practice as loss can be so crippling one would not be able to move on if the loss is given all of one’s mental energy, or if this habit is a result of growing up in the United States and its pension for apathy. I express my longing for formidable events to occur in my life that force me into a direction in my life as to avoid regret from the free choices I make about my future. I feel a guilt toward leaving a loving home in order to pursue my own ambitions, but feel I must otherwise I am doing a disservice to my parents. I summarize these feelings and desires into animals within my scenes often representing myself and my decisions. The scenes I create are not limited by time and space which allow for the characters and symbols to operate authentically not informed by my reality. It is a method of confronting aspects of myself I usually ignore, and prompting the audience to place their own worries and desires onto my characters. They operate similarly to a Rorschach test where certain character’s souls are left empty which force the audience to subconsciously place their own biases into them. In order to avoid total chaos, I include more unilateral symbols that can place an audience into a similar headspace. I wish my art to guide an audience like a freeway. One may choose any lane, mental interpretation, they'd like to, but the lanes are limited by guard rails, universal symbols.
